What is the main difference between HDMI and VGA cables?

HDMI and VGA cables will both transmit data, and their difference is that HDMI will transmit both digital audio and Digital video altogether. While on the other hand, VGA will transmit analog video signals only. Different companies develop these cables to transfer data between different devices that are compatible with each of the cable type. For example, HDMI is compatible with digital TVs, projectors, and some types of computer monitors. On the other hand, VGA is compatible with old models of computer Screens. If you want your Old machine to have HDMI output, some converters will convert signals from VGA to HDMI. These cables are readily available in the market today at an affordable price

HDMI is the short name for a high definition multimedia interface that will combine the transmission of both digital audio and digital video from an HDMI source. It was created by seven companies and was introduced in the market in 2002, and they aimed to create a digital interface that will be compatible with DVI backwardly. Today it is the commonly used standard transmission of digital signals. It will transmit uncompressed digital audio data from an HDMI consistent source to a compatible computer monitor, digital television, digital audio, and video projector. HDMI implements the EIA/CEA standard that defines video formats and waveforms. It transports compressed and uncompressed LPCM audio and auxiliary data. Signals carried by HDMI are electrically compatible, and no signal conversion is necessary. There are the release of several versions of HDMI  since the initial release. Besides, they have been improving on the audio and video capacity. Performance resolution and colors have been growing too. The new HDMI cables have advanced features such as 3D, Ethernet data connection, and CEC extensions. HDMI specification defines all the protocol’s electrical interfaces, signals, and mechanical requirements of the standards. The maximum pixel clock rate for the HDMI 1.0 is 165Mhz, which is enough to allow 1080p. HDMI 1.3 will increase that rate to 340Mhz, which will allow for higher resolution, such as WQXGA across a single link type.

Video Graphics Array or simply a VGA is a connector that features a three-row 15-pin DE-15 connector. This 15-pin VGA connector is provided on many computer monitors, laptop computers, video cards, laptop computers. On computers or other small devices, a mini-VGA port features in place of the full-sized VGA connector. VGA connectors and cables will usually carry analog component RGBHV (red, green, blue, horizontal sync, vertical sync) video signals, and VESA Display Data Channel (VESA DDC) data. The same VGA cable will carry several supported VGA resolutions standards and will range. You will connect to your VGA outputs to interfaces with different signaling, more sophisticated converters may be used. Most of them need an external power source to operate and are inherently lossy. However, many modern displays are available with multiple inputs, including VGA, in which case adapters are not necessary.

VGA to SCART converters can pass color information, because VGA — SCART RGB signals are electrically compatible, except for synchronization. Many modern graphics adapters can modify their message in software, including refresh rate, sync length, polarity, and number of blank lines

HDMI has more advantages compared to VGA and is the most popular today. They will have their differences, but HDMI is more superior and advanced. These cables will play different roles and are applicable in different circumstances. For example, you will need a VGA cable from your CPU to your monitor for display. On the other hand, an HDMI cable is ideal when you want to display videos in digital form. HDMI cables remain the most preferred since you will not need any other cable and will carry both audio and digital signals at a time. When you will need a cable, always ensure you go for the best cable that will serve you right.
