When it comes to the GDU BYRD Premium quadcopter, you get a new approach to collapsible drones. How you may wonder instead of going smaller, they have gone bigger.

So has the new design paid off or is it a major flop. Let us find out! When looking at other collapsible quadcopters, they market them to capture anything and go anywhere.

The truth is once the GDU Byrd Premium folds up with the gimbal and camera removed it has the same size as an iPad. However, flip out the booms, and you see a massive bird in front of you with a footprint of 18.5 by 20.5 x 8.75-inches.

The diagonal wingspan is 24.5-inches and more extensive than the Inspire 2 from DJI. Furthermore, GDU stipulates the craft is:

  • Rain
  • Saltwater
  • Heat
  • Dust and cold proof resistant

Considering these characteristics, we still recommend you remain cautious and fly safe conditions.
With the battery and props, the drone weighs 4.2 pounds. Out of the box, our first impressions are it feels cheap with a hollow lightweight plastic feel to it.

Compared to the DJI quadcopters, it is close, and the controller is top-notch with a rubber inlay and secure in the hand.

The GDU offers you versatility

The modular styled gimbal accepts other designs to house infrared cameras. Included you get a 10x optical model with ILDC silent frame, and the gimbal extends below the landing gear.

You can use the 4K camera, gimbal for both pitches, and yaw input. The construction of the gimbal is durable, and even the overall build is excellent.

The camera adds a hefty weight, and everything is aesthetically pleasing. Furthermore, compared to using other 4K cameras, the one equipped with provides a crisp detail without judder or fragmentation.

At times, you do get some fish-eye occurring at the edge of media but not too noticeable. The still images of 12MP are also good.

How well does it fly?

GDU advertise the battery life of the Byrd Premium 2.0 at 29-minutes, and in our test, it was accurate.
During a moderate breeze of 10 miles per hour, the speed does change and get 20 minutes of flight time before it engages in the Return-to-Home pattern.

The Byrd handles well despite its gawky look and is quite fast at 33.5 miles per hour. You get tight handling, and the drone remains responsive.

You do not get intelligent flight functions, but the return home feature works well. Furthermore, it has a five-pound payload capacity with the motor and twelve propellers.

On the other hand, it has three downward-facing vision sensors, sonar, image, and infrared. However, it does not have obstacle avoidance.

You can get stellar handling with excellent performance when flying, and the image quality is excellent. There are other models available in the collection as well from a Standard to Advanced version.

Furthermore, you can use it with your iOS or Android device when downloading the application plus it comes with remote control.

Our Verdict

When it comes to the GDU Byrd Premium 2.0 drone, you get a compact and versatile quadcopter with outstanding features.

However, we did have minor concerns with downloading the app for the Android phone. The other matter is the price and quite high.

Furthermore, we thought we would be getting an upgraded app from the Google Play Store but had to update it to the latest version.

After downloading the application, there were minor connection problems, and GDU advised we use the iOS version. However, it does not come with confirmation of the telemetry, making it unsafe.

The handling is perfect and holds its position well while adjusting altitude. The controls responsive and the return home works well.

On the other hand, you do get a foldable drone with rock-solid control and incredible camera. The fact that you can upgrade the gimbal is a bonus.

On things sure, you will be getting a unique drone with compact travel size, and once unfolded, it is like a beast.
GDU Byrd Premium 2.0 Drone is a foldable quadcopter packed with amazing accessories. You can even upgrade the 12-megapixel camera and gimbal if you want.
