The first impressions we got is that the Ehang Ghostdrone 2.0 VR looks similar to the Phantom. However, there is a difference the motor faces downwards instead of upwards.

Another thing we did find is that the latter does outperform the forerunner. On the other hand, it does have an eye-catching design.

You can buy the quadcopter in white with black, orange, or blue propellers. Furthermore, you buy them in Android and Window mobile editions with the iOS one sold separately.

The craft measures 7.7 high with a width of 13.8 and a depth of 13.8-inches. Therefore, you will need to list it with the FAA before you start flying it.

The construction is plastic and not as sturdy as the composite material used in the DJI versions. You get the 4K camera mounted on the 3-axis gimbal. Furthermore, you find a micro SD card slot on the camera.

So how do you control the drone? You use the Smartphone app, as there is no remote control for the model.

However, your phone does not communicate directly with the craft but with the VR headset instead.

The connections broadcasted using Wi-Fi, and you need to make sure the headsets charged before use. If you do not wear the goggles, you are not able to view the video feed from the camera.

Alternatively, you can have the camera operator wear the VR headset to direct the camera while you pilot the drone. Therefore, using the drone without it is not ideal.

Another problem you may face is wearing the headset with glasses and using it without spectacles leaves you with a grainy video feed.

Therefore, if you do not want to use the goggles, we recommend looking at the Ghostdrone 2.0 Aerial instead.

Alternatively, you can look at the Phantom 3 or 4 from DJI.

How well does the app work?

The applications not spectacular but basic and with the VR model, there is no video feed available on the phone screen. You get the buttons to control the footage and have a compass to show the orientation of the craft.

Furthermore, there is a slider bar to manage the altitude and yaw. For moving the drone in a specific path, you need to hold your finger down on the middle of the compass and tilt your device in the direction.

You get added buttons available on the screen to land and bring the drone home. You need to do this for the first three sessions before the Avatar mode unlocks. What it does is mimic your phone’s motion with the accelerometer to move it through the air.

You adjust the altitude with the slider on the screen. The idea is nifty but does not work as effectively as using a remote control. If you do happen to crash, the quadcopter you do get a protection plan from Ehang. You can have it repaired three times throughout a year.

How fast is the quadcopter?

The top speed is 25 miles per hour, but you cannot achieve it in mild wings. Furthermore, the stated operating range is 3,280 feet, but we only managed 1,300 feet before the footage cut out.

The battery life is 25-minutes, but while testing the average time was 20-minutes. What is excellent on the craft is the camera that provides substantial detail with a 30fps capture rate. However, it does not support 24 frames per second capturing. You can choose to shoot at 60fps or 120fps.

These work well for slow motion, but the drones a bit slowly for slowing down footage and not recommended. You do get a mild distortion in the content as well.

Furthermore, as it does offer a wide field of view, you may find images of the propellers in it as well. Stabilization is excellent with the gimbal, but using it with the VR headset does cause slight movements and media comes through jumpy.

You record content in JPG format with a 12-megapixel resolution, and you do not have a raw option available. With the dynamic range, you find bright highlights caused by the sun and blows out on cloudy days.

If you enjoy using VR headsets, then you will love the Ehang Ghostdrone 2.0 to capture footage from the sky. You do not get a remote control and need to use the goggles and phone instead. While it does not compete with the best camera drones available, it still provides you with excellent video and picture quality. For the hobbyist the craft is perfect, but we would not recommend it for the professional photographer.

Our Verdict

For virtual reality users, the Ehang Ghostdrone 2.0 VR is the best cheap camera drone with cool features. You get automated safety functions with your phone controls and simple to fly.

We did find some pairing issues, and the live video feed was a bit iffy compared to other quadcopters reviewed. With the goggles, you can still get some smooth flying, but it is a bit marred.

For an entry-level drone we can recommend it but not for professional use. Therefore, if you want to get your hands on the quadcopter, you can get it here.

Do you want a drone with the first-person view at an affordable price? Read the Ehang Ghostdrone 2.0 VR review as the quadcopter includes a VR headset. The entry-level drone is ideal for the hobbyist and first-time flyer.
